Preparing
for Vista
Learn how you can enjoy the benefits of the new Windows Vista
operating system without compromising your business' security.
After many years in
development, Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows Vista, became
available to businesses with volume license agreements on November
30. The home version of Vista will be available on January 30, 2007.
The Vista launch has been highly anticipated, as it took more than
five years for Microsoft to release this updated version of Windows.
Vista offers a variety of new features ranging from a streamlined
and enhanced user interface to faster data transfer for remote data
sources. Windows Vista is also being touted as a more secure
operating system. However, industry experts question the level of
security it is able to offer since Vista’s primary function is as an
operating system and cannot address all security issues including
viruses and Trojan horses.

8 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your
Server
By Christopher Elliott

from the Microsoft Small Business Center at
http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness.
Your server hardware is a ticking time
bomb.
Don't
be alarmed. It may never actually "blow up" — which is to say, melt
down and take lots of data with it. But one day, sooner or later, it
will become obsolete. And for your business, that's potentially an
explosive liability.
"The older hardware is,
the more likely that a failure and loss of productivity will occur,"
warns Donald Hess, senior systems engineer at Entre Computer
Services, a systems integrator based in Rochester, N.Y. "In general,
a company can avoid big expenses by updating its servers every three
years. If it waits five years, then there's a big risk of being
compelled to upgrade many components simultaneously." Ouch.

Are Your Backups The Best?
It might be time to change
from Tape to Hard Drives
Most
businesses back up their data to tapes. However, the current trend is to move
backups to hard drives instead. This new method has become popular because of
the introduction and low price of external USB hard drives. Drive-to-Drive
backup may be as simple as copying the contents of one drive to another.
However, companies can still enjoy the same flexibility, reliability and
automation that backup software offers by using the software to back up to drive
instead of tape.
